This morning I had a lot to do but figured since I had the day off I would get up early and hunt for an hour or so. This is supposed to be our last cold night for a while and as soon as everything melts the ducks will scatter back out to all of the flooded fields. They are much harder to hunt when this happens so I figured I better hunt today while the were concentrated on the few areas of open water. I got there 45 minutes early and set up a small spread of 7 mallard decoys (3 drakes and 4 hens), and a pair of pintail decoys. After setting them up close to the shore, I got hidden in some tall reeds and awaited legal shooting time (LST). In the minutes leading up to it, I saw no less then 100 mallards fly by. It was incredible! I have never seen that many in this spot. As LST rolled around, I could see several different groups of ducks scattered around me. As I was watching a group that was starting to swim towards my decoys, out of the corner of my eye I caught movement. I slowly turned my head and saw a pair of mallards landing in my spread. I pulled up and knocked the greenhead down. I started to swing onto the hen but the drake was still pretty alive and was trying to get away so I put another shot in him. It made for a quick but very enjoyable hunt that started off my day well.
